36 AALL SPECTRUM | WWW.AALLNET.ORG Q uestion: What role does technology play in the transformation of law? Technology Transformation T echnology is transforming the legal profession. Not a day goes by that we don't read in the legal press about a new artificial intelligence (AI) or data analytics tool en- tering the legal market. These new technologies hold out the promise of helping lawyers to practice more efficiently, serve their clients more effectively, and promote access to justice more broadly. While some people fear that these new tools will lead to the mass out- sourcing of lawyers or the creation of robot lawyers, I think just the opposite is true. AI-powered tools require smart lawyers to train these new systems, and these systems will alleviate lawyers of the more redun- dant and repetitive tasks and allow them to focus on more value-added work. Lawyers will still have the same duties, including duties of supervi- sion and independent judgment. • • • • STEVEN A.
