46 AALL SPECTRUM | WWW.AALLNET.ORG Q Overwhelmed by your new role? Asking for assistance is the first step in amping up your leadership and management skills. I just read your November/ December column and wish that someone had steered me in the direction of leader- ship. Right now, I'm feeling a little stressed. A little over a year ago, our firm acquired another firm in a merger. My director was kept busy fusing all of the library functions while I handled the firm-wide research and training de- mands. Before the year was out, and with little warning, my director retired. I've been promoted to director, and although I'm flattered, I feel like I'm in over my head. I really admired and respected my former boss. She had always been generous in encouraging me to attend professional activities, both local and national. However, she basically just ok'ed my requests. She was more of a role model than a mentor. We never really worked side- The Learning Curve by-side regarding budget, personnel, and collection development. The firm has been great, and I've had the support of both the human resources and the finance departments, but I feel overwhelmed and would like some suggestions on how to quickly acquire the skills I need for this job. What do you suggest? REFERENCE DESK BY SUSAN CATTERALL BUSINESS EDGE
